Recently Google announced the launch of it’s +1 button. This in some way is similar to Facebook’s ‘Like’ button but currently just works on their Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) where you can +1 (pronounced plus one) a listing in the Search Results – this also will affect AdWords (paid ads).
If you +1 a listing, then when the same page appears in front of someone else in your Social Network (currently defined as People in your Gmail & Google Talk chat list, in your “My Contacts” group in Google Contacts or People you follow in Google Reader or Google Buzz) so your Network can see who +1’d what, and it will even show the names (or some of them) of who from your Network +1’d a link.
So what benefit does this have to us as website and online ship owners? Well that at present remains to be seen. For the time being +1 is only available though Google search, however they will soon (a couple of months) release a +1 button to add to your website alongside your Tweet and Like buttons. If you want to know when this is available you can sign up for notifications.
Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land has written a very comprehensive article about this which fills in a little more of the background, and what the expected impact this will have on the Facebook Like button.
