Which browser to use?

By on June 3rd, 2010

Have you thought about changing your default browser before? Not sure which browser to choose?

Most people have Internet Explorer (IE) as a default.

Why change browsers?

IE has a lot of bugs and some sites may not display correctly in the older versions. If you’re on a older version of this browser, or even unsure, then check for updates as it could improve performance of the sites you visit and keep the correct layout of the site. Not upgrading your browser is like having anti-virus software that hasn’t been updated since 2006. There’s no real point to use it, so why not upgrade or change browsers?

There are a range of alternative browsers out there, which simply have a better support for the web industry than IE.

Here are the main 4 alternative browsers which I recommend and that you may be interested in ‘converting’ to:

  • Firefox by Mozilla
Commonly used as the first alternative for Internet Explorer. With a full range of plug-ins  and themes to allow you to customise it fully. Also, Mozilla takes time and consideration to make sure the browser is safe and web compliant. Firefox is updated more frequently than IE. This prevents hackers exploiting the security flaws in the browser.
  • Safari by Apple
Similar to Firefox, but it is more commonly used as the primary browser on a Mac. It it available on both Mac and PC. Safari has a smaller choice of plug-ins and themes compared to Firefox. Safari is also known as a ‘Webkit’ browser which basically means it has extra features providing better aesthetics and hence a more pleasant browsing experience.
  • Opera
Opera is not as popular as the rest of the browsers listed here, but during the last year the demand is growing. Similarly to the rest of the browsers, Opera has plug-ins (or widgets as they are known on Opera) and there are a huge amount to choose from. This allows you to personalise the browser to suit you!
  • Chrome by Google
Did you know Google had a web browser? It’s also in my opinion a really good reliable browser. Chrome has just came out of BETA testing and is now a stable release for all platforms (Windows, Mac and Linux). Chrome has a large amount of plug-ins and themes to choose from. Chrome is known as the fastest and most powerful web browser out there currently. Chrome also has a ‘Webkit’ browser like Safari. Here is a video of how Google tested their browser!

Firefox, Safari, Opera and Google automatically check for updates. Some even install the updates automatically to help keep you safe on the web!

I have tried and tested most browsers and I have decided to switched from Firefox to Chrome as it loads the websites faster and has a lot more user feedback to tell you what it’s doing. As it is a Webkit browser it supports the new CSS 3 which have better features to help make your browsing a happier and pleasant experience.
